Roy Hunter has been in the industry for over 10 years.  He has experience working in both the public and private sectors, as well as working for both small and large environmental and geotechnical firms.  Hunter Drainfield Design (HDD) is a result of his professional background and personal passion for being outdoors and helping others.  HDD maintains an intentionally small team to facilitate a client-centered approach.  Roy values establishing a connection as part of the drainfield design process to make sure your short and long term needs are considered.

Understanding

Septic Inspections vs. Site &

Soil Evaluations

In Virginia, it’s common for homeowners, realtors, or contractors to first receive a septic system inspection from a licensed installer. If that inspection identifies concerns or deficiencies, the appropriate next step is often to consult a licensed Onsite Soil Evaluator (OSE).

Hunter Drainfield Design serves as an independent OSE.

Our role is different from that of an installer. While installers evaluate system performance and visible conditions, an OSE is licensed to assess the soil, site conditions, and regulatory requirements that determine what solutions—if any—are appropriate.

What to Expect from a Site & Soil Evaluation

A site and soil evaluation is a field-based, independent assessment that may include:
Soil analysis and classification

Evaluation of existing system conditions (within OSE scope)
Review of health department records and regulations
Determination of whether repair, replacement, or no action is necessary
In some cases, our findings may confirm the need for design and permitting. In others, we may determine that no additional work is required, or that a different approach is appropriate.

Why This Step Matters

An installer’s inspection and an OSE evaluation serve different but complementary purposes. When deficiencies are noted, Virginia regulations often require evaluation by an AOSE before moving forward with permitting or design.
This process ensures that any recommendations are based on site-specific data, regulatory compliance, and long-term system performance.

Our Commitment to Independence

Hunter Drainfield Design operates independently from installers.  Clients may come to us through referrals or independently, and we encourage clients to work with any qualified professional they feel comfortable with, regardless of referral source.  All of HDD’s work is conducted objectively, based on field conditions, data, and state guidelines.
Our responsibility is to provide clear, unbiased recommendations—whether that leads to a design, a repair plan, or confirmation that no further action is needed.
